김연아 선수 UN연설 교정 도운 '언어술사' 만나려면?

김연아 선수의 UN 연설 교정을 돕고, 신촌센터 수강생과 함께 참가한 번역 대회에서 입상한 다양한 경험을 가진 조나단 선생님.

조나단 선생님은 카피 에디터와 작가로도 활동하면서 특히 다양한 언어에 관심이 많습니다. 또한 한국의 속담과 한국어가 지닌 다양한 뉘앙스, 그리고 특유의 유머 감각을 사랑하게 됐다고 합니다! 월스트리트 잉글리시를 전형적인 '학교'가 아닌, '놀이터'로 생각하고 수강생들과 함께 마음껏 영어를 즐겼으면 좋겠다는 조나단 선생님의 강사 소개, 지금부터 시작하겠습니다.

자기소개 부탁 드려요.

Hello, my name is Jonathan. I'm from St. John's, Newfoundland, an island located at the easternmost point of not just Canada, but all of North America. When I'm trying to explain to students where I'm from, I sometimes call it "Canada's Ulleung-do."

I studied English Literature and Philosophy at my hometown university, but I also did a lot of foreign language electives, which I think ended up influencing my career choice more than any of my major program courses.

안녕하세요, 저는 조나단입니다. 저는 뉴펀들랜드의 세인트존스에서 왔는데, 이곳은 캐나다뿐만 아니라 북미 전체에서 가장 동쪽에 위치한 섬이에요. 회원분들에게 저의 고향에 대해 설명할 때마다 저는 이곳을 ‘캐나다의 울릉도’라고 말하곤 합니다.

저는 제 고향에 있는 대학교에서 영문학과 철학을 공부했고 또한 많은 외국어 선택과목을 공부했는데, 이 경험이 그 어떤 전공 과정보다 저의 커리어를 결정하는 데에 많은 영향을 끼친 것 같아요.

Outside of teaching, I've mainly worked as a copy editor and writer. One interesting client I worked with was Erica Choi, who at that time was an EBS teacher. I helped her to develop some English video teaching ideas and scripts. She’s also known as the English teacher for a lot of the national Olympic athletes. One funny and unexpected experience that led to was, in the lead-up to the Pyeongchang Olympics, I helped to proofread the speech that Yuna Kim delivered at the UN. 

가르치는 일 외에, 저는 주로 카피 에디터와 작가로도 일했어요. 함께 일하면서 흥미로웠던 클라이언트는 그 당시 EBS 강사였던 ‘에리카 최’님이었는데, 영어 인강과 대본을 만드는 일을 같이 도왔습니다. 또한 에리카는 많은 국가대표 선수들의 영어 강사로도 유명한데요, 덕분에 평창 올림픽을 앞두고 제가 김연아 선수의 UN연설 교정을 도왔던 뜻밖의 경험도 있었습니다.

Please introduce your hometown.

고향 소개도 해주시겠어요?

Newfoundland is a rocky island on the Atlantic Ocean with harsh winters, lots of wind and snow, but also a wealth of beautiful scenery, and open, friendly people. It's not quite like anywhere else in Canada. People there traditionally have a strong accent a little bit similar to Irish, that many "mainland" Canadians have a hard time understanding. Being next to the ocean, fish is a staple food there, especially cod, but fresh lobster, squid, and scallops are also plentiful.

뉴펀들랜드는 대서양의 바위섬이에요. 겨울에는 아주 춥고, 바람이 많이 불고, 눈도 많이 오지만 경치가 아름답고 사람들이 개방적이고 친절하죠. 이곳은 캐나다의 다른 지역과는 완전히 달라요. 이곳 사람들은 전통적으로 아일랜드어와 약간 비슷한, 강한 억양을 가지고 있어서 많은 ‘본토’ 캐나다인들은 이해하기 힘들 정도예요. 바다 옆에 위치해있기 때문에 생선이 주식이고, 특히 대구가 많이 잡히고 신선한 랍스터, 오징어, 그리고 가리비도 굉장히 많답니다.

These days, one of the main tourist attractions in Newfoundland is iceberg season. Due to its location, in the spring, Arctic ice melts and breaks off and the icebergs float down southward along the coast of the island. People visit to take pictures of the icebergs against the background of the little houses and shops that line the coast.

요즘 뉴펀들랜드의 주요 관광요소 중 하나는 빙산이에요. 봄에는 북극의 얼음들이 녹고 부서져서 빙산들이 섬의 해안을 따라 남쪽으로 떠내려가거든요. 해안가에 늘어서 있는 작은 집과 상점들을 배경으로 빙산 사진을 찍기 위해 관광객들이 많이 방문한답니다. 

What made you come to Korea and what do you think the charm of Korea is?

한국에 오게 된 계기는 무엇이고, 한국의 매력은 무엇이라고 생각하세요?

​To be honest, I first came to Korea more or less on a whim. I knew almost nothing about the place, the people, the language, the food: I was completely ignorant. This was a few years before the cultural "Korean Wave" reached Canada. I studied French and Italian at university and always imagined myself living in one of those countries after graduating. Instead, after university, I found myself in Toronto somewhat lost and bored and without much sense of purpose or direction in life. I came across a job posting for a teaching job in Korea and I figured I had nothing to lose.

사실 저는 처음 한국에 다소 즉흥적으로 오게 됐어요. 한국이라는 나라뿐 아니라 사람, 언어, 음식 등에 대해 거의 아는 게 없었죠. 그때는 캐나다에 한류 붐이 일어나기 몇 년 전이었거든요. 저는 대학교에서 프랑스어와 이탈리아어를 배웠고, 졸업 후에는 그런 나라 중 한곳에서 살고 있을 거라고 상상을 했었죠. 그런데, 정작 졸업한 후에는 뚜렷한 목적과 방향 없이 삶에 지루함을 느끼며 토론토에서 지내고 있었어요. 그러다 저는 한국에서의 교직 구인 공고를 우연히 보게 되었고 그때 저는 도전해도 잃게 없는 기회라고 생각했죠.

In retrospect, I think my life's been enriched by coming here more than it would have been by going to France or Italy or one of those countries. I think you can learn much more about yourself and about the world by moving to a place you have no preconceptions about.

돌이켜보면 프랑스나 이탈리아, 혹은 그러한 나라들 중 한곳에 가는 것보다 한국에 와서 제 삶이 더욱 풍요로워졌다고 생각해요. 선입견조차 없었던 곳으로 오게 됨으로써 제 자신, 그리고 세상에 대해 훨씬 더 많이 배울 수 있었으니까요.

I've left Korea several times, but I keep coming back, and the main reasons are the food and the language. When I was younger, I thought of French and Italian as "beautiful" languages, and I probably thought Korean or other Asian languages were in some way "ugly"; but after living here and making an effort to learn Korean, I've come to love the folk wisdom, the varieties of nuance, and the melancholy sense of humour the Korean language is full of.

제가 한국을 몇 번이나 떠났지만 계속해서 돌아오고 있는 주 이유는 음식과 언어예요. 제가 어렸을 때는 프랑스어나 이탈리아어를 ‘아름다운’ 언어라고 생각했고, 한국과 같은 다른 아시아 언어들을 사실 저는 어떤 면에서 매력이 없다고 생각했던 것 같아요. 하지만 한국에 살면서 한국어를 배우려는 노력을 한 이후에는 한국의 속담과 한국어가 지닌 다양한 뉘앙스, 그리고 특유의 유머 감각을 사랑하게 됐어요. 

Could you tell me your work history?

현재까지 월스트리트 잉글리시에서 일하신 근무 경력에 대해서 말씀해 주시겠어요?

Currently I'm on my third stint at Wall Street English. I worked in Busan once before for two years, then after a break I worked at Sinchon Center for one year, and then after another break I came back to Busan again.

현재 저는 월스트리트 잉글리시에서 세 번째 근무를 하고 있어요. 먼저 한 번은 부산 센터에서 2년 정도 일을 한 후 첫 휴식기를 가진 뒤에 신촌 센터에서 1년 정도 근무를 했어요. 또 한 번의 휴식기 뒤에 다시 부산 센터로 돌아오게 됐답니다. 


One of my proudest moments came when I was working at Sinchon Center. As a literature major and a student of languages, I've always wanted to try my hand at literary translation, but I’ve never done any formal Korean language study so my progress in Korean has always been slow.

저의 인생에서 가장 자랑스러웠던 순간 중 하나는 신촌 센터에서 일할 때였어요. 문학을 전공하고 언어를 공부하는 학생으로서 항상 문학작품 번역에 도전하고 싶었지만, 정식으로 한국어 공부를 해본 적이 없어서 한국어 실력 발전이 항상 더뎠어요. 


One of the students I met at Sinchon Center, Park Ahram, was a professional English-to-Korean translator. Soon after we met, we talked about collaborating on a translation. When an opportunity came up, we entered a contest together and ended up winning a 10,000,000 KRW prize! The short story we translated was called "Forever Summer" by Jeong Yihyun, and our translation was later published in Azalea, a Korean literature journal at Harvard University.

신촌센터에서 만난 회원 중에 전문 번역가인 ‘박아람’이라는 회원이 있었는데, 그 회원과 만난 지 얼마 지나지 않아 번역 작업에서 함께 협업하는 것에 대해 이야기를 나눴어요. 그리고 기회가 돼서 함께 번역 대회에 참가했고 1,000만원 상금까지 받을 수 있었답니다! 이때 저희가 번역했던 단편소설 제목은 정이현 작가의 ‘영영, 여름’이며, 이후 하버드 대학교의 한국 문학잡지인 ‘아젤리아’에 실렸습니다.

As a teacher, I think of my job as helping students to make their dreams come true, but that was one time when a student helped one of my dreams come true!


강사로서 저의 직업은 회원분들의 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 돕는 것이라고 생각하는데, 그때는 회원분이 저의 꿈을 이뤄준 순간이었어요!

What do you think the strength of Wall Street English is?

월스트리트 잉글리시만의 강점은 무엇이라고 생각하세요?

My personal opinion is that language learning is creative work. You can't copy someone else. You have to do the work yourself. You have to learn the rules, yes, but you also have to invent things and combine words in new ways in order to express yourself. Everyone has to figure out their own way into English.

저는 언어를 배우는 것은 창의적인 작업이라고 생각해요. 다른 사람을 그저 따라 하면 안 되고 여러분 스스로 직접 하셔야 합니다. 전반적인 규칙을 배울 필요는 있지만 여러분 스스로를 표현하기 위해선 새로운 방식으로 말을 만들어 내고 단어들을 결합해야 합니다. 모든 사람들은 영어를 배우기 위한 스스로만의 방법을 알아낼 필요가 있어요.

I think the strength of Wall Street English's program is providing a variety of spaces and opportunities for students to feel safe taking risks, making mistakes, and trying to express ideas or feelings that are difficult to translate from their mother tongue.

Please say something to beginners who want to learn English.

영어를 배우려는 이들에게 한 말씀 해주세요.

I think it's important to approach language learning as play, not work. Learn how to have fun in English. Even if your reason for studying English is work- or career-related, I think you will make much better progress if you know how to enjoy yourself. Make jokes, make up stories, feel free to lie—if lying is more fun than telling the truth—make fun of yourself, make fun of your teacher, and find topics that inspire and motivate you to keep learning.


언어를 배우는 것을 일이 아닌 하나의 놀이로 여기는 게 중요하다고 생각해요. 영어로 재미있게 노는 법을 배우세요. 영어를 배우는 이유가 일과 관련된 것일지라도, 스스로 즐기는 법만 터득한다면 영어실력을 훨씬 발전시킬 수 있을 거예요. 영어로 농담을 해보고, 이야기를 지어내고, 자유롭게 거짓말도 해보세요 – 거짓말하는 게 사실을 말하는 것보다 더 즐겁다면 말이죠. 또 영어로 스스로를 놀려보고 선생님에게 장난도 쳐보고, 여러분이 계속 배울 수 있도록 동기부여를 주는 토픽을 찾아보세요.
